I’ve met some awesome and inspiring providers and clinicians in my 26 years of treating as a physical therapist, being a population health early adopter and successful program builder, becoming an alternative payment model and value-based care expert, then a start-up company leader, and now in my work in a health policy and government affairs role.

Healthcare providers have expertise and experience that can be combined with other new and/or acquired skills to add value to a BIG value to a wide range of roles along different career paths within and adjacent to VBC.

One of the incredible therapists I’ve gotten to know and call a friend is Dr. Brandy Wilkens, PT, DPT. Brandy is a doctor of physical therapy and a healthcare quality expert. She offers high-value services and a course on healthcare quality that’s approachable and actionable (I can vouch for it—I’m a customer!). She also has a podcast, Kairos Conversations! (I’ve been a guest twice if you are interested 😊) 👇️

Brandy offers career coaching for healthcare professionals, Defining Point Career Coaching, which you can check out here.

She also has a new website devoted to career exploration. It’s called the Clinician Career Directory, and you can find it here.

I just wrote and published an article for Brandy to share with her audience.

Here is the article intro:

For healthcare professionals interested in a career path outside direct patient care, working in value-based care related roles might be the perfect next step for you. Let’s explore what value-based care really means, why it's becoming increasingly important in healthcare, and the career paths that open up if you learn about how VBC works and what is required for organizations and providers to be successful.

Is it “if” or “when?”

Value-based care is already here. Well-structured and mature programs improve patient outcomes, reduce cost, and improve the experience of care for both patients and healthcare professionals themselves. It’s a rare “win-win-win” in healthcare.

Modern value-based care principles are only about a decade old. But some early adopters are exclusively providing care within the constructs of value-based payment models.

So it’s not “if” or “when,” but “how long it will take” for value-based care to overtake fee-for-service.

The good news for healthcare professionals is that value-based care opens up many new doors for skilled healthcare providers who understand how it works.
